Stale Day

SCENE ONE:
At Mark & Ski's house.

[ Jenni is standing in the hallway in a
dark, satin dress.  As she waits seated
in the living room, Jai comes down
stairs in view. ]

JAI: Aren't you suppose to be at
the restaurant soon, where is
everyone?

[ Jenni sits back, sighing. ]

JENNI: Yup  They went to go pick
up this game but Chais should
be back any minute.
JAI: Well you look very nice.

[ She looks up, smiling at him. ]

JENNI: Thanks Jai.

[ Suddenly the front door comes
open, Billy & Chais walk in. ]

CHAIS: Sorry about that.
JAI: I see school isn't the only
thing you're failing at bud.

[ He smirks at Chais, walking by. ]

CHAIS: Anyway hater.  Ready to go?

[ Chais takes Jenni's hand, pulling
out a rose from inside his jacket. ]

JENNI: You're sweet.  So whose
idea was this really?
CHAIS: It was all me, I swear.
JENNI: Whatever you say.  Let's
get going though.  We don't
want to miss our reservation.

[ They leave the house. ]

[ On a rainy & slow afternoon; Lorenzo,
Hithe, Sascha, & Karie are deep

into conversation. ]

LORENZO: Okay guys, here's a question
for you.  Imagine a way where this
world ends.  What would be the
worse possible scenario?

HITHE: A fire.  What if God decided
to burn all the horrible people?
SASCHA: Or if they're subjected
to those creepy insects.  Maybe
they even eat them alive.

KARIE: You mean locust?
HITHE: Please. I'll karate chop one
of those mofos.  Waa yaah!

[ Hithe makes harsh movements
with his hands & everyone laughs.

A bell is heard as someone enters
the Salon.  Lorenzo gets up to assist
but is stopped by Karie. ]

KARIE: You're fine.  I got it.

[ Up by the front door. ]

KARIE: Thanks for coming on a
Saturday.  You can step into the
office, I'll be there in a second.

[ She looks to see everyone enjoying
the chat except Hithe, who is staring
in her direction.

Karie walks in, locking the door. ]

SCENE THREE:
Other side of town, On the Vine.

[ Jenni & Chais are seated inside
the restaurant.  Their waitress hands
over the menus, disappearing into
the back room. ]

CHAIS: I told you we would get
here on time.
JENNI: Yes we did.  Just barely.
CHAIS: I want a humongous
steak and a baked potato. What
about you?

[ Chais browses through his options
after giving Jenni an off smile. ]

JENNI: I don't know why you
wouldn't sign up to re-take
those classes.
CHAIS: Because this is summer
and I don't wanna talk about
school.
JENNI: What if they hold you back?

CHAIS: Babe please.

[ He gives Jenni a stern look &
she notices his arm tense up on
the table.

Minutes later, they are talking
over salad & bread. ]

JENNI: If I eat enough of this, I
won't even make it to the entree.

[ She notices Chais is now staring
down at his plate.  Not paying
any attention. ]

SCENE FOUR:
Back at the Salon.

[ Inside Ace's office. ]

KARIE: I know this isn't exactly the
proper way to do things but we
need a lot of help here.

VISITOR X: Oh.  What's not right
about it?  Questioning your
competition or bringing your
ex right into your new man's
space without his knowing?

[ X laughs while holding up a
picture of Ace & Karie. ]

KARIE: Ha ha ha. Put that down
and focus on the task at hand
please.

[ She snatches it from X's grip
not joining in his amusement. ]

KARIE: We we're making strides
in our first year but it seems like
this year we've been going down-
hill and I don't know why.

You've ran a Salon for five years.
What do you think we're doing
wrong?
VISITOR X: Maybe it's your manage-
ment, I mean you seem more
involve then anyone.  Where is
Acer by the way or does he
refuse to work Saturdays?

[ Karie looks up quickly. ]

KARIE: He must never find out
we're getting your help okay.

Hithe either.  Understand?

SCENE FIVE:
Later, at Mark & Ski's.

[ Jenni & Chais are sitting on lawn
chairs in the garage.  The door is open
& they look on as rain sprinkles down
in front of them. ]

JENNI: It's rained so much I'm starting
to forget what a sunny day feels like.

[ She leans over & kisses Chais. ]

CHAIS: No ones home.  We could go
do stuff in the bedroom.
JENNI: Oh yeah, what kind of stuff?

[ She exclaims, giving Chais a hard
time. ]

JENNI: If you wanna kiss me more
just say so, no need to dance
around the issue.
CHAIS: That and something else.
JENNI: Is someone getting tired
of the house above the waist
rule?
CHAIS: More like frustrated.
JENNI: Well calm down. Let's go
inside and figure it out.

[ She walks away but Chais stands
back. ]

CHAIS: I'll be there in a minute.

[ He takes a lighter out of his pocket.
Looking around first, Chais puts a cigar-
ette into his mouth.  Puffing away in
hiding. ]

SCENE SIX:
Outside the Salon.

[ Karie & Hithe are locking up
after everyone else has left. ]

HITHE: Hey I know you are worried
about how things are going. We're
having a meeting about it first thing
Monday morning.
KARIE: That's a good idea.
HITHE: Yeah.  I didn't want you to
think me and Ace are ignoring
this.
So who was the gentleman?

[ Karie looks up at him. ]

HITHE: Not like that.  Just wondering.
KARIE: Alright.  He's a former teacher
at the beauty school I went to.  His
Salon has been expanding every
year for five years now.

HITHE: That's cool.  Nothing wrong
with asking for help.
KARIE: You and I see that but would
Ace?  I doubt it.
HITHE: Yeah I can see him not
wanting to cooperate.
KARIE: So this will stay between us
right?  You promise?

HITHE: Sure.  I promise.

310 Now I'm That Bitch

[ Present day, Deborah
Simons meets her ex
husband Mark at a
local Dunkin’ Donuts ]

‘Well, you made it.

Early and on Sunday
morning. . .Should I
feel special?

MARK: No, I actually
have an engagement
to take care of
after this
DEBORAH: Oh I
figured that
MARK: Yeah, so what’s
this about Deb?
DEBORAH: Hey, since
were waiting here
You want a straw-
berry frosted donut?
MARK: That’s a
tempting offer, but
Ski has me on
this new, exciting
diet [ laughs ]

DEBORAH: Oh well!

I don’t see how
one, little bite
would hurt

[ She hands him one
& he quickly eats it ]

[ Hauling groceries,
Jeszyca doesn’t
notice a man
standing by her
door. . . ]

[ He turns around
as she walks up ]

‘Hi. . .what are
you doing here?’

CLYY: I’ve been
thinking about you
Jesz, ever since you
showed up at the
bar that night
JESZYCA: That’s
nice, how did
you find out
where I live?
CLYY: Oh, I have
my ways. . .You
must have forgotten
how persuasive I
can be. . .
JESZYCA: Right,
I guess I’ll need
that restraining
order
CLYY: No reason to
be hostile. . Let’s just
hang out like we use
to before you left. You
know I’m worth it

[ After fleeing from
his ex, Mark is at
the counter of a
jewelry store. . . ]

‘So, that will be
$2,021. . .’

[ He pays, then
opens the cover
displaying a male
diamond ring ]

[ At home, Ski
turns over in bed
as he feels some-
thing hit him in
the back. . . ]

[ Sitting up, he
grabs onto a line
and feels a ring
hooked on it ]

[ A few minutes
later Mark comes
into the bedroom ]

‘How’s that for
a catch?’

SKI: Definitely better
then fishing

[ He laughs ]

Well, Skilyr
Sirom, I guess
that means you
will marry me

[ Back at Jeszyca’s
place, her & Clyy
are watching a
movie. . . ]

‘Well, this is a
change from what
we usually do. . .’

JESZYCA: Yeah,
there is a such
thing as having
a night in
CLYY: Right!

I’m surprised
you can afford
this place
Working where
you do now
It can’t be
easy. . .
JESZYCA: I’m fine

CLYY: How about,
you scratch my
back and I’ll
scratch yours. . .

[ That night Mark
shows up to Deb-
orah’s house. . . ]

DEBORAH: You
made it just in
time to help with
the furniture
MARK: Very funny

DEBORAH: No,
but I do need
some help pick-
king up this room
MARK: Sounds
simple enough

[ They clean in silence
until Mark interrupts. . . ]

MARK: So, I
know you & Ski
aren’t exactly friends
But I might as well
tell you now the
big news

[ She looks up ]

We’re engaged!

DEBORAH: Already?
It’s not been
that long, has it?
MARK: Eight months
DEBORAH: Even now
I bet I still know
you better than
him [ smiles ]

But back to the
real reason I
asked you here

[ She walks over
to him. . . ]

MARK: Here you
go with your
agendas
DEBORAH: It’s not
an agenda actually

I’m moving to Japan
next week Mark,

I got the promotion.

[ Jeszyca stands up ]

‘I think it’s time
to leave Clyy’

CLYY: I’ll be out
of your hair soon
I just, have a tiny
favor to ask you

[ He stands up
putting a stack of
cash down on the
table. . . ]

JESZYCA: What’s this
for?

CLYY: It’s $725 Jesz
And I’ll leave
it all here
All I want is
one private show
like you use to

I wont touch you

. . .I promise

JESZYCA: That’s
not the point
jerkoff, it would
still be wrong

CLYY: Look, cut
the innocent act
with me
You know how
this works.
If you weren’t
going to cooperate,
why did you invite
me in?

‘Here’

[ He hands her
the cash. . . ]

CLYY: I’ll even give
you a few minutes
to think it over.

[ The next morning,
Mark’s son Chais
is celebrating his 13th
birthday. . . ]

[ After the birthday
singing. . . ]

‘Honestly, a netbook?

You think it’s a
little early for the
whole “strangers at
his fingertips’ idea?’

DEBORAH: Oh, lighten
up you

[ He’s watching Ski
& his son talking ]

DEBORAH: Hey, despite
popular belief
I will miss them,
a lot
MARK: I know you
will

‘Well I better get
going. . .’

DEBORAH: You know,
I’m not forbidden
You can still call
if you ever need
anything

[ She hugs him &
walks off as Ski
comes over ]

SKI: So I guess
it’s goodbye
MARK: Yeah
‘Konichiwa’!

[ Jeszyca is waiting
for Amber to pick
up the line. . . ]

‘Morning beautiful.’

JESZYCA: Hey,
can you come
over fast. . .

We really need
to talk...
