Scene O n e: 

[ Same Night, Kira’s. ] 

 

[ Scott arrives to see his girlfriend 

sitting up on the bed, huddled in 

a blanket. 

 

He comes behind her, wrapping 

his arms around her sides. ] 

 

SCOTT: Hey, I got here as fast 

as I could.  What’s wrong?  

 

KIRA: A couple weeks ago, I found 

out I have acute lymphoblastic  

leukemia.  

 

SCOTT: Cancer. 

 

KIRA: Yes.  I’m sorry I waited to 

tell you.  I just had to make sure 

that I was alright first. 

 

I’ve also been pretty worn out  

with work and trying to distract 

myself. 

 

SCOTT: You don’t have to apologize. 

I appreciate that you did tell me. 

Will you need to do chemotherapy? 

 

KIRA: Not in the usual way.  I’m starting  

with this. 

 

[ She pulls out a small basket carting 

the multiple medications she will 

be on. ] 

 

KIRA: It’s called induction therapy.   

It’s to start getting rid of the cells. 

 

I’ll be out of work for a while and 

will have to stay in the hospital. 

 

 

SCOTT: I’ll pack a bag so I can be 

with you when I’m not working. 

 

KIRA: That’s sweet but you don’t  

have to do all that.  I’m fine to stay  

alone. 

 

SCOTT: I know your parents are out 

of state.  I want to.  You don’t have 

to do this by yourself.   

 

[ Kira relaxes, lying up against him. ] 

 

[ Hours later, she has fallen asleep &  

Scott is staring at the TV screen.  

 

A repeated horn blow shakes him back 

to reality.  He slowly gets up from the 

bed, muting the TV. ]   

 

[ Scott flicks the bathroom light on. 

Turning on the faucet, he splashes cold 

water directly into his face.  

 

Looking at the mirror, he begins to  

heavily breathe. ] 

Scene T w o: 

[ Back At The Simon’s. ] 

 

[ Chais, Ski, & Uncle Josh are 

hanging out downstairs after most 

of the family have cleared out. ] 

 

“Well, I’m getting tired boys.” 

 

[ Chais says, standing up and  

stretching. ] 

 

CHAIS: You two going to top-tail 

it in the guest room? 

 

UNCLE JOSH: Come on Ski. 

There’s plenty of room. 

 

[ Ski rolls his eyes, following him. 

Chais heads to his bedroom. 

 

They continue to saunter down the 

dark hallway. ] 

 

SKI: Wait. Do you hear that? 

Someone is in there already. 

 

[ Josh turns the handle, opening 

the door. ] 

 

[ Flicking the lights on, he is shocked 

by whom is revealed to them. ] 

 

SKI: Mom? 

 

UNCLE JOSH: Dad!  

What the hell is going on

in here? Where is mom?

M’s DAD: She left son.  Just calm 

down and let me explain this. 

[ They both sit up to face them. ]

Scene T h r e e: 

 

[ The Next Morning, Kaori’s. ] 

 

[ She opens the door, seeing a familiar 

figure standing outside.  They walk into  

her kitchen, comfortable at the table. ] 

 

“Thanks for the breakfast invite. 

At first, I thought you had text 

the wrong person.” 

 

KAORI: No.  I think it’s time that 

we finally talked.  Things can’t  

continue like this.  

 

Especially since I’ve decided  

not to adopt. 

 

JAI: Really, that’s great news! 

KAORI: I know you want to keep it 

and I would like for you to be around. 

 

JAI: We’ve been through so much 

together.  

 

You’re the one who helped me 

realize I needed to get away from 

A’myan.  When I was hiding things 

from my family.  And off the drugs. 

 

KAORI: I know.  You’ve grown so much 

since I’ve met you.  You don’t deserve to 

be away from your child. 

 

Or me.   

 

[ Jai looks into her eyes, slowly moving 

closer to her as they kiss. ] 

Scene F o u r:  

[ 3M’s Medical Center-Magic Springs. ] 

[ Stuu leaves his car, going toward the 

hospital entrance.  

 

Inside, he is now at the front desk. ] 

 

STUU: Hi.  Can you tell me what room 

Kira Dannon is in? 

 

Thanks. 

 

[ Stuu knocks on the side of the door. ] 

 

“I guess I’ll be growing my hair out 

now since I don’t trust anyone else 

to do it.” 

 

[ Kira turns, smiling.  Recognizing his 

voice. ] 

 

KIRA: Hey! 

 

STUU: Hey, hope you don’t mind Yaz 

told me. 

 

KIRA: No.  I’m glad you’re here. 

 

STUU: Good.  So, you’ve been alone? 

 

KIRA: Scott is staying here with me.   
He’s at work. I just started medication  

and I’m just praying I’ll be able to  

handle the intense side effects.  

 

STUU: Well, you know me.  I’m  

always around.  You can text or call 

me any time.  I’ll send you funny memes 

too to keep your mind off things. 

 

[ Stuu stands up from the chair & walks 

over to her bed, sitting down on the edge. 

 

They don’t see Scott coming around the 

corner. ] 

 

“Hey, I got someone to cover my shift.” 

 

SCOTT: Oh, hey Stuu. 

 

[ He greets him, with a phony shake. ] 

Scene F i v e:  

[ Afternoon, Ashbury Park. ] 

 

“How are you feeling?” 

 

KAORI: I’m fine. 

 

JAI: You want to walk for a bit. 

 

KAORI: Sure. 

 

JAI: We used to go on walks 

all the time.  I miss this.  

 

[ Kaori grabs his hand. ] 

 

KAORI: There’s a lot we used 

to do.   

 

[ She laughs. ] 

 

JAI: Oh yeah. 

 

I can’t wait to find out what 

we're having. 

 

KAORI: I have an appointment 

next week to see. 

 

JAI: One sec.  It’s Chais. 

 

[ He answers his phone. ] 

 

“Hey, you’ll never guess 

who Josh caught. . .” 

Scene S i x: 

[ Eve Hours, In Kira’s Room. ] 

 

[ Scott & Kira are cuddled in the 

bed, watching a movie. ] 

 

“Tell me if you need me to 

move or anything.” 

 

KIRA: No, you’re fine. 

 

[ She sits up, kissing him on the 

cheek. ] 

 

KIRA: Hey, you don’t mind that 

Stuu came by.  You know I cut 

his hair and we talk. 

 

SCOTT: Of course not.  Everyone 

needs friends.  You are just friends, 

right? 

 

[ Scott smirks, and she yells his name. ] 

 

SCOTT: I’m just playing, babe.  I  

know he's not your type. 

 

[ Kira stays silent, pondering.  

 

He feels her growing warmer. Kira 

gets up, grabbing onto her stomach. ] 

 

“I feel sick all of a sudden.” 

 

SCOTT: Should I get the nurse? 

 

KIRA: It’s just nausea. 

 

SCOTT: I will anyway.  

[ He quickly leaves in a panic. ] 

Scene S e v e n: 

[ At Mark & Ski’s, Living Room. ] 

 

[ Mark is lying on the couch alone, 

surfing through movie intros when 

his phone rings. ] 

 

“Thanks for taking my call, 

considering your brothers are 

completely ignoring me.” 

 

MARK: Rightly so.  How are you being 

so nonchalant about the fact that you 

are cheating on mom? 

 

M’s DAD: Whoa.  No one is cheating. 

 

MARK: What would you call it then? 

 

M’s DAD: Me and your mother have decided 

to open our marriage. 

 

MARK: Open it to what?  You’re in your 60’s. 

Thirty-five years together and now you're

wanting to do this?

 

M’s DAD: Look, I’m sorry you had to find 

out like that but we’re happier this 

way. 

 

MARK: What kind of example is this setting? 

 

M’s DAD: Don’t get all high and mighty with 

me, Son. 

 

This is NONE of your business!   

 

[ His father ends the call. ]
